The Rose Field, is the highly anticipated final volume in The Book of Dust trilogy. The novel picks up directly after the events of The Secret Commonwealth, with Lyra alone in a deserted city searching for her dæmon, Pantalaimon. Her friend Malcolm is also on a quest to find her. Their journeys converge as they move toward a mysterious red building in a desert, with the Magisterium in pursuit. The book is described as a thriller and a "bildungsroman," or a story of psychological and emotional growth, and Pullman himself has stated that he hopes it will be read as a fundamental story, rather than just a fantasy novel.
