Summary

Eat, Gay, Love: A Queer Journey of Heartbreak, Hope, and Global Community

LONGLISTED FOR THE POLARI FIRST BOOK PRIZE

In the spring of 2012, Calum’s six-year relationship ends, leaving him heartbroken and lost. He leaves his hometown behind to embark on a life-changing journey around the world.

From teaching in Rome to exploring Berlin’s sex clubs and caring for tigers in the jungles of Thailand, Calum encounters LGBT+ individuals from all walks of life. He meets an Italian teenager facing a homophobic father, a kathoey navigating life as a trans person in Thailand, and a young HIV-positive man living on the streets of London.

Their stories, filled with both hardship and hope, reveal the diversity of queer life and shed light on homophobia, sexual violence, marriage equality, and gender identity. Through these connections, Calum finds the strength to move on from heartbreak and discovers a beautiful, supportive global community.

Eat, Gay, Love is a travel memoir that celebrates the power of community and honors the extraordinary lives of LGBT+ people around the world.
