About the Author

Erica Fischer was born in 1943 in Britain, where her parents were refugees. In 1948 they returned to Austria where she studied at the Interpreters' Institute of the University of Vienna. Since 1988 Erica Fischer has worked as a freelance journalist, writer and translator. She lives in Berlin.

In Berlin of 1942, Lilly Wust was married to a soldier and the mother of four children. Her quiet domestic life was forever changed when she met and fell in love with Jewish Felice Schragenheim. Aim e and Jaguar, as the two called one another, embarked on an ecstatic affair, exchanging letters and poems and even signing a marriage contract. After only sixteen months, their happiness was destroyed by the Gestapo: Felice was taken away to the Theresienstadt and Gross-Rosen concentration camps. Lilly received a last letter from Felice in 1945: 'A thousand thanks for everything and think of me always. That will help because I'm still outside and it's minus 15 here. I love you very much.
