Description

Still the only book published anywhere in the world which is devoted entirely to the principles of aeromedical transport, Aeromedical Transportation has rightly become known as the sole reference for the industry. This second edition has been radically revised and updated; featuring the latest research, updated references and new chapters on the transport of intensive care patients, and medical emergencies/death in flight. Since the first edition was published in 1996, the concept of 'evidence-based medicine' has been accepted as essential in any book which endeavours to be the accepted knowledge base in its subject area. A very practical text, international in its approach, much of its content is devoted to clinical matters. Administration and organisation are also discussed, but are addressed from the standpoint of the clinical aeromedical escort. The text is suitable for medical, paramedical and nursing personnel and for those working in organizations whose duties include the transportation of the sick and injured by air.

Critic Reviews

'This second edition will be a much appreciated update of the first and remains a basic read for those interested in the field.' Alex de Voogt, Maastricht Universsity, the Netherlands, HFES Newsletter, June 2007 ’Aeromedical Transportation' by Dr Terry Martin has been a cornerstone of our training of flight doctors and nurses. This 2nd edition however validates my dreams and vision of aeromedical transport, where doctors and nurses work together in a mutual supportive way. But the book transcends far beyond the medical and nursing issues. It puts the best practices from Europe, Australia, USA and Asia in its aviation, logistic and administrative context. Therefore the book will find its place in the teaching library of every international company involved in patient transport.’ Patrick Deroose, RN, CCNC, Group General Manager, Assistance Operations, International SOS ’This book is the ’must have’ for everyone who desires a satellite view of existing knowledge about patient transportation in the aeromedical setting. The book is not only a rich source of focused information, it’s also easy to digest and a stimulant for initiatives on how to improve the standard for aeromedical transportation. It will prove of great relevance and interest primarily for doctors but also nurses, paramedics and those who administer air ambulance organizations.’ Helge Brandstrom M.D., Senior Consultant Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Umea University Hospital, Sweden and Project Medical Director, Swedish National Air Medevac ' The author said that the book "is intended as a basic primer for those who seek to work in transfer and retrieval medicine". He foresees the next decade as an" exciting time for the academic development of the subject" - one that will see "postgraduates with masters and doctorates in patient transportation".' More on this Book

This book addresses relevant issues of the special physical, physiological and psychological stresses that are important in the flight environment. It describes, in detail, the conditions needing this form of transport, and how patients may be safely and efficiently carried. The growth in international tourism, and in particular air travel is reflected in a profusion of activity in the aeromedical transportation of those who have been injured or fallen ill while far from base. Prehospital medical care has also developed rapidly, with helicopters in use with many emergency services. (Other aviation medicine texts mostly deal with the care and occupational problems of aircrew). This second edition of Aeromedical Transportation: A Clinical Guide is a more accurate, succinct, relevant and referenced version of the first. Since the first edition was published in 1996, the concept of 'evidence-based medicine' has been accepted as essential in any book which endeavours to be the accepted knowledge base in its subject area. It is still the only book published anywhere in the world which is devoted entirely to the principles of aeromedical transport. As such, it has rightly become known as the sole reference for the industry. To maintain this credibility, the book has beeen further researched, totally corrected, updated and referenced. It has more international information, omitting the first edition's less useful information. The structure and chapter titles are broadly the same. New material includes chapters on the transport of intensive care patients, and medical emergencies/death in flight.
