Taro Yashima (1908-1994) studied art at the Imperial Art Academy of Tokyo and at the Art Students' League in New York City. Yashima's books have received many honors including three Caldecott Honor awards for Crow Boy (1956), Umbrella (1959), and Seashore Story (1968).
