Description

Wycliffe's home overlooks a peaceful, West Country estuary - but even here he can't get away from crime. When he is taking a Sunday morning walk along the shore, he comes across a service revolver with one chamber recently fired. In recent years Wycliffe has often regretted the fact that his rank cuts him off from the early stages of an investigation, but here he is, in at the very start.

The case takes Wycliffe into the world of art robberies and crooked dealers, to a suicide which may be a murder, and a hunt for a missing yacht. As the investigation escalates, Wycliffe begins to wonder exactly where the clues are leading...

Critic Reviews

“"Whenever a character comes back as many times as Chief Superintendent Wycliffe, a reviewer is faced with a dilemma: What can you say that you haven't already said? We called attention to Burley's solid plotting, well-described and colorful settings, and intriguing characters . . . Finally, we have no choice but to repeat ourselves by emphasizing one more time how pleasurable the familiar conventions of the genre can be in the hands of a writer as good as Burley."”

Another must for collectors--Sunday Times
Burley is one of the adornments of the classic English crime novel--Yorkshire Post
First-class, old-time, hyper-ingenious whodunit--Observer
Wycliffe is a rarity among the solid, decent English coppers abounding in fiction. WJB's success is thoroughly deserved--Scotsman
Wycliffe teases out the truth with delicate skill that leaves the reader intrigued and convinced--Mail on Sunday
You can always count on Wycliffe ... he inevitably guarantees a good story, convincing characters and appealing landscape--Financial Times
