A captivating and exquisitely rendered novel that spans the last decades of 19th century China, as the country began its complex transition from a closed, imperial power to a modern nation, embracing Western ideas and influences. Jane Yang was born in the Chinese enclave of Saigon and raised in Australia where she grew up on a diet of superstition and family stories from Old China.
