The original abbey was built, destroyed and rebuilt in various forms before undergoing restorations between 1845 and 1870 that saw key sections rebuilt in an exuberant Decorated Gothic style. It is no wonder that clergyman and antiquarian James Bentham would make documenting the magnificent cathedral his lifes work.
