Description

Part celebrity memoir and part self-help book, Better Than New goes behind the scenes with an entrepreneurial single mom who worked her way from waitress/real estate agent to home renovation expert, preservationist, and television star. With eight chapters in the book—eight lessons told through her life story and through several of the homes she has remodeled – readers will get to see another side of Nicole Curtis, including the private and personal struggles that are not seen on TV. Working in Detroit and Minneapolis, Curtis has opened her fans’ eyes to the beauty of older homes and the value of reclaiming and reusing authentic original materials rather than sending dumpster loads to the local landfill. Curtis applies the same principles to her personal life – valuing old friends, rescuing dogs, and advocating for the wounded, the elderly, and the disadvantaged. Readers will find inspiration to apply to their own lives supplemented with never-before-seen photos of Curtis and the homes she renovates.

Critic Reviews

“"The book satisfies the curiosity about Nicole's life that fans have been craving. . . . Written in Nicole's signature down-to-earth but hold-no-punches style, the prevalent message is to always look at the glass as half full--or, more appropriately, look at the falling-down house as half standing." --POPSUGAR "There's nothing staged about Rehab Addict star Nicole Curtis's real life. In her new book, Better Than New: Lessons I've Learned from Saving Old Homes (And How They Saved Me) , Curtis opens up about her colorful, and sometimes troubling, past. . . . But the HGTV star also writes about how she manages to be strong for herself and her kids through it all." --People.com "For the first time, Curtis pulls back the curtain of her life to reveal troubled relationships, how she rose from Hooters waitress to TV star, and the lessons she's learned along the way. . . . Her book is your chance to find out her side of the story. . . . Filled with fun personal photos." -- The Detroit News , Best Home Books of 2016 "Inspiring. . . . .Curtis' energy, grit and love for the hustle are infectious." --BookPage”

About the Author

Nicole Curtis is the host of the HGTV and DIY Network hit Rehab Addict, which has been on the air since 2010. A native of Lake Orion, Michigan, Curtis moved to Tampa, Florida, after graduating high school. There she bought her first home: an ugly, inexpensive 1945 ranch. She taught herself basic carpentry, plumbing, tiling, and painting, and completely remodeled the home, selling it for a profit. That first house launched her on a path that ultimately led to adding real estate agent, interior designer, and successful entrepreneur to her résumé. She has rescued landmark homes in Minneapolis, Detroit, Atlanta, and Los Angeles from the wrecking ball, and helped LeBron James turn around his family’s neighborhood in Akron, Ohio.
Curtis’s high-profile career as a real estate speculator and historic renovation expert is secondary to her role as a single mom to 18-year-old Ethan and 9-month-old Harper.
