Who is trying to sabotage the charioteers Could it be an inside job, or someone with a grudge from long ago How many men and horses will die before the killer is caught
“The traditional arc of the sports story is emphasised by references to some of the worst aspects of Roman slavery in flashbacks to Nubia's background, followed by the best outcome of slavery for a Roman, as Sisyphus is suddenly freed with the final victory. This makes the story about so much more than which set of horses wins a race and effectively uses the Romans' slave trade to enhance the sports story, while also maintaining a sense of the horrors of the world outside the Circus.-- Juliette Harrison , POP CLASSICS”
the most thrilling part of the novel for me was Caroline Lawrence's depth of research. Her relation that some of the characters were based on real historical figures gave me great delight, and will doubtlessly enthuse all her readers to find out more about the Roman world.
It's a roller-coaster of a read that grips one until the very last page... The story has pace and thrills and spills aplentyCaroline Lawrence is American. She won a scholarship to Cambridge to read Classical Archaeology, then did a degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College, London. She lives with her husband, a graphic designer, by the river in London and is active as a speaker in schools and at book festivals.
