Description

The programme 'Create with Artists' offers the most inspiring workshops the Stedelijk Museum of contemporary art in Amsterdam has organized for young people over the past decade. These workshops with artists and designers have become a true phenomenon in Amsterdam. Only about a dozen kids can participate in a workshop, which are always sold out, leaving the parents and many, many others jealously behind. In response to their ever-increasing popularity, the workshops have been transformed into this book. Now everyone can do these fun workshops-created by renowned contemporary artists and designers-at home, at a party, at a community centre, or at school. All the artists have a special connection to the museum and many of them are world famous. In this book they give us insights into their ways of looking at the world and the questions they ask themselves. The artists also share their personal tips and techniques. The workshops all start with a question to trigger the imagination and are spread out over an array of media, from painting, to sculpture, video, design, graffiti, photography, and more. The workshops are accessible for both children and grownups and can be done in groups as well as individually. The Stedelijk Museum is the largest museum for modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands.

Critic Reviews

“"Anyone who wants new, fresh views of the artistic potential in ordinary objects will realize that Create with Artists shows that anyone can hone an artist's eye through surprisingly simple approaches that yield exceptional results; especially when guided by artists who have already employed these techniques in their own applauded creations." - Donovan Literary Services”

About the Author

Rixt Hulshoff Pol (Author)

Rixt Hulshoff Pol used to be the director of Unseen Photo Fair & Festival. Before becoming director in September 2015, Hulshoff Pol was the founder and manager of the Education Department at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Hulshoff Pol has years of experience in communicating with a broad range of audiences in the field of contemporary art, including photography and design. With a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and two Masters both in Communication and Art Science, she champions experimentation and develops new ways to spark the public's interest in art. As manager of the Education Department Hulshoff Pol initiated programmes such as the artists workshops, a peer education programme for young talents (Blikopeners) and 'Unforgettable Stedelijk', a program for people with Alzheimer and their caretakers.

Hanna Piksen (Author)

Hanna Piksen is at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam responsible for the popular workshops with artists on Sunday. Thousands of children have participated in these workshops already. With her background in art history and experience as a tour guide, she knows that the most valuable things happen when the unexpected is enabled. And that everyone is creative. This also helps out in the Familielab, a creative space for families in the museum, and in the other manifestations of the Family program. The book Create with Artists brings this philosophy within the reach of not only families, but also to anyone who is looking for a creative boost.
